The Education Center opened to the public in 2008. The 1000 m² studio space can hold more than 70 students and resident artists at any given time. Our long-established Friday Lectures Series has invited many local and international artists to share their works with our Jingdezhen community since 2005. In addition to our year-round Regular Courses, our Education Center offers local craftsmanship workshops for hands-on experience in traditional crafts and invites international artists for Master Classes, providing a unique and enriching learning experience for students at all levels. Our large versatile space is perfect for groups and universities; with classes and demonstrations specific to their curriculum that interact with the local community.
The core mission of The Education Center is to promote experiential learning and integrate traditional crafts into the contemporary context. The Pottery Workshop Jingdezhen invites groups of all types and sizes. We have hosted small and big groups from all walks of life, including students, ceramics enthusiasts, and master craftspeople. Some groups work in our studios learning traditional Chinese ceramics techniques, while other groups tour the ceramics areas and countryside. We can work with you to produce a custom plan specific to the needs of your group. The Pottery Workshop will help you arrange custom-tailored classes in traditional Chinese ceramics techniques with local masters:
Blue and White Porcelain Painting (Qinghua)
Learn about the long history of blue & white, specialized brushes for application, how to prepare qinghua for painting, and various painting techniques. Students can practice on greenware tiles, bowls, plates, and vases they can purchase at local shops.
China Painting (low-fire)
Xincai and Fencai are unique surface decaration techniques in Jingdezhen. Students can select fired porcelain pieces (plates, bowls, vases, etc.) to paint on, or have local craftsman decorate your design for you.
Low Relief Porcelain Carving
Introduction to various carving techniques. Students can carve their creations on already-made greenware (plates, bowls, vases, etc.) purchased from local shops.
Throwing & Trimming
A local potter will show you the intricacies of throwing and trimming Jingdezhen porcelain. Customized vessels can be ordered at any stage to be altered, glazed, and fired.
Plaster Mold-Making
All the sculptures here in the Sculpture Factory come from molds. A local plaster mold maker will show you the basics, including an introduction to plaster mixing, and single and multi-part molds. Any object can be brought to the mold maker, and be made for slip casting, press molding, or high-pressure slip casting.
